Although the first attempt by General Ulysses S. The Vicksburg campaign was one of the Union Army’s most successful endeavors in the Civil War-it was also one of the longest. Vicksburg, given its strategic location on the east bank of the Mississippi River, was “the nailhead that holds the South’s two halves together,” according to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. With the Battle of Gettysburg victory around the same time, it presented a turning point for the Union in the Civil War. The Siege of Vicksburg was a major victory for the Union, giving it control of the Mississippi River. ![]() With the Siege of Vicksburg, Scott’s Anaconda Plan, designed at the beginning of the Civil War with the goal to blockade the southern ports and to cut the South in two by advancing down the Mississippi River, was complete. Lincoln, who had noted how important Vicksburg was to the Union and the war, upon hearing of the surrender, stated, “The father of the waters goes unvexed to the sea.” The Union won at Port Hudson five days later. The nearly 30,000 troops were paroled, Grant not wanting to have to address the soldiers. ![]() Pemberton formally surrendered on July 4. Grant responded that only unconditional surrender would suffice. On July 3, Pemberton sent a note to Grant suggesting peace. In late June, Union troops dug mines underneath the Confederate troops and, on June 25, detonated the explosives. Many Confederate soldiers became sick and were hospitalized. Pemberton was boxed in with little provisions and diminishing ammunition. Grant regrouped and his troops dug trenches, enclosing Pemberton and his troops. Upon arrival, two major assaults on May 19 and 22 by the Union forces failed. Grant arrived in Vicksburg on May 18, where Confederate General John Pemberton was waiting with his 30,000 troops. On May 2, his troops took Port Gibson, with his troops abandoning supply lines and sustaining themselves from the surrounding countryside. Once landed east of the river, he began to head northeast. He led troops south 30 miles south of Vicksburg, crossing over at Bruinsburg via Union fleet. This time, given the location of Vicksburg, he took the bold approach of marching south on the west side of the Mississippi River, then crossing over south of the city. After assuming command of the Union forces near Vicksburg on January 30, 1863, the Union having waged a campaign to take Vicksburg since the spring of 1862, he had been part of an initial failed attempt to take the city in the winter. The location was ideal for defending, protected on the north by swamps of the bayou and was located on high bluffs that were along the river, and was given the name, the “Gibraltar of the South.” ![]() If the Union could capture this stronghold, it would cut off Confederacy states west of the Mississippi from those east of the Mississippi. Along the Mississippi River, Vicksburg was one of the main strongholds remaining for the Confederacy. ![]() We can take all the northern ports of the Confederacy, and they can defy us from Vicksburg.” Lincoln well summarized the importance of Vicksburg, Mississippi, with both the Union and Confederacy determined to control the city. President Lincoln said of Vicksburg, “See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket. Vicksburg was surrendered on July 4, 1863. The Battle at Vicksburg would be the longest military campaign of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln believed taking Vicksburg was the key to victory. Grant pressed through to take Vicksburg, Mississippi, get the final Confederate strongholds and control the Mississippi River. General-in-Chief Winfield Scott, was designed to split and defeat the Confederacy by closing in on the coasts east and south, control the Mississippi River, then attack from all sides. Additionally, medical management may be the choice if other comorbidities preclude safe surgery. Zygomatic fractures are usually observable if there is minimal or no displacement of fracture segments. Management of ZMC fractures is controversial and requires tailoring to each case. ![]() Management of ZMC fractures can broadly classify into three categories: medical management, closed reduction, and open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF). A comprehensive cranial nerve examination should be completed, paying special attention to facial movement and sensation. The face should be palpated, noting any bony step-offs or mobility of the underlying craniofacial skeleton. Enophthalmos may be visible from a worms-eye view. The clinician should note the position of the globe. In a patient with a ZMC injury, the facial flattening may be apparent from a birds-eye view, which is caused by depression of the malar eminence however, the facial flattening may get obscured by overlying soft tissue edema. An ophthalmologic exam should be performed, including visual acuity, visual fields, and extraocular movements. Ipsilateral epistaxis is common and requires controlling if severe. Inspect the face, noting any obvious asymmetry, lacerations, and ecchymosis of the skin. It is also vitally important to "clear" the cervical spine for any associated injury. One should ask about prior facial trauma or facial surgeries, which may make fracture repair more difficult.Īs with any trauma patient, it is important to start the examination with an evaluation of the "ABCs." Ensure the patient has an adequate airway, is breathing spontaneously, and that any bleeding is under control. Note whether the injury was caused by blunt or penetrating trauma, as penetrating trauma is more likely to involve deeper-lying neurovascular structures. It is crucial to ascertain the mechanism and timing of the injury. Tubercle of Whitnall: The attachment site of the lateral canthal tendon located on the medial surface of the frontal process of the zygoma. The zygomaticus major and minor are muscles of facial expression that originate on the zygoma and insert near the corner of the mouth to assist with commissure elevation. The masseter originates on the inferior aspect of the zygoma and zygomatic arch and inserts on the angle of the mandible. The temporalis originates along the temporal line of the parietal and frontal bones and travels medially to the zygomatic arch to insert on the coronoid process of the mandible. The frontal branch then transitions to the undersurface of the temporoparietal fascia where it travels to innervate the frontalis muscle. The facial nerve's frontal branch emerges from the parotid gland within the parotid-masseteric fascia and crosses superficial to the zygomatic arch in the innominate fascia deep to the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS). Severe ZMC fractures may also result in ipsilateral facial palsy since the facial nerve is intimately associated with the zygomatic arch. The zygomaticofacial and zygomaticotemporal branches then exit via identically named foramina in the zygoma. They are branches of the zygomatic nerve, which arises in the pterygopalatine fossa and enters the orbit via the inferior orbital fissure, and travels along the lateral orbital wall. ![]() ![]() The zygomaticofacial and zygomaticotemporal nerves transmit sensory input from the lateral cheek and anterior temporal area, respectively. ![]() This would allow you to practice using “decode Morse from audio” apps, which I understand are available on smartphone platforms, for example. I don't know how commonly available a line output is.) (I can't find a good existing explanation to link here! A code practice oscillator is just a device with key input, audio output (usually with a built-in speaker), and an internal oscillator so that it can produce an audio tone that is switched on and off by the key input. Well, I can't answer as to “standard” as I'm just learning myself, but I can think of a couple of ways to do this without getting into completely custom interface hardware and drivers, or needing an interface with directly readable signal lines like a serial port or parallel port which is less common these days:Ĭonnect the key to a code practice oscillator that has a line-level audio output, then connect the audio to your computer's line-in. Of course, there is no standard way to do this either, just as there is no standard communication program, or standard keying software, or standard operating system. You'd simply need to set the input of your audio-over-internet application to be the output of your morse-code-keyer application, instead of a microphone. Any application that can send audio over the internet could do it, for example, Skype. No doubt, it is possible to send Morse code over the internet. Again, no real standards, besides those imposed by the software you select. Thus, your computer looks, to the transmitter, as an external keyer. It's also possible to use some of the other control lines to drive an opto-isolator or relay which in turn connects to the key jack on your radio. Calling it a "standard" might be a stretch, but there seems to be a convention: However, most software I have seen uses some of the control lines on an RS-232 serial port. ![]() How you do this will be dictated by the software you select. ![]() ![]() Make a right- on any of the images, and then do one of the following: ![]() How do I extract text from an image in Excel?
